Wear 24; or, What Made Me Dislike the Smart Watch

In my daily life, I always seem to be the guy that all of my friends, family, and even colleagues seek out for advice on technology. As such, I do like to make sure I am familiar with at least the most current and popular tech on the market. I am also a little wary of purchasing products with the most cutting edge advancements, as I am apt to find something just a little better in a few minutes at the pace that innovation seems to reach us anymore. So I do have a tendency to go with what I surmise to be at least current, and with potential to still be relevant and useful in the near future.

I also should tell you, that I do have an affinity for buying cheap stuff on a whim, and with all of those variables in play I bought a discontinued very inexpensive smartwatch, the Verizon Wear24, at least so I could try out this tech, and was utterly disappointed.

There are some great things about this watch, but that’s all due to it’s OS. It originally was using Android Wear, which has since been updated and renamed a couple of times, first to Wear OS by Google, and now simply Wear OS. So I could do almost all the things I want to do with a smartwatch, like get notifications, read messages, track my steps, flip through my music playlists, get the weather, and the time. I also have loved the idea that I could change my watch face at any time, like having a new watch every day. So the Wear 24 has all of this, and more, like being able to remotely snap pictures from my phone, ask an occasional question of the Google Assistant, etc.. but that all is the OS, really, not the watch itself.

So I was in looking for a cable in my bag one day, and a friend looked in and commented, “You carry an extra watch?”  “Of course,” I said. “I still need to tell the time throughout the day when this watch dies,” showing him the remaining battery life on the smartwatch was at 10%. And that pretty much sums up my experience with this product. What I most need a watch for is to easily tell the time, and if all the other stuff on it drains the life from it, I have a dead weight on my wrist. And this typically happens after only 5 to 6 hours after a full charge.

I have since not worn it much, unless I know I’m only going to be using it for a short amount of time. I have since updated to the newest version of the OS, and it does seem to be a bit nicer to navigate, but again, that’s not the watch itself.

This has not ruined the idea of a smartwatch for me, but with most of my tools and utilities, I operate on the principle that “the best tool is the one you use,” and I certainly won’t be using this tool if the battery doesn’t last through the day.

I am attaching links below, at least to bring awareness to the watch I am writing about, and show that I am not the only reviewer who disliked this item.

Citizen Eco-Drive

In my quest to find the perfect watch for daily wear, I have long been looking at, and recently purchased a watch with Citizen’s Eco-Drive movement.  I wanted a chronograph but without the complexity of my Seiko Perpetual. I decided on the Citizen Chandler CA0621-05L as shown here.

Citizen Watch

So far, I love the watch. It meets all of my prescribed needs for a daily watch: It has a nice looking, easy-to-read display, a date complication, lume in the hands and dial, and the chronograph function. Because of the ec-drive movement, I am not concerned about accuracy as some of my automatics have, and I won’t need to be concerned over an untimely discharged battery, as the solar charged battery is not likely to lose it’s oomph for at least 10 years.  It wasn’t expensive, so I don’t mind letting it getting a few bumps during the working hours, or even a work call during a church or community event.

All in all I am so far satisfied with this purchase, and although not particularly eye-catching, it does it’s job and I am pleased.

Seiko Recraft Automatic

Great retro styling on a workhorse Seiko movement

I became interested in automatic watch movements after a bad deal on a “fashion” style quartz watch. It was a seemingly great bargain at about 50 dollars on a watch with an MSRP of about $250.  Within the first day, the minute hand became stuck, and I thought it might just be easy enough to pop it open and fix, having a fair amount of mechanical ability.

Once I popped off the back of the case, I was shocked, and even a bit angry to see mostly plastic filler inside the case, that the movement itself was no larger than a dime, and the battery took up almost half of that!

Ever since that day, I vowed to never buy a watch based on looks again. A little web research on what makes a quality watch and I was catapulted into the world of automatic watches. A little more research, and I found that an automatic watch with a quality movement can be had for a very reasonable price. At first I was looking at the wide variety in the Seiko 5 series, but happened upon their ‘Recraft’ series, which have the same movement as many of the Seiko 5’s, but are styled like some of their classic models from the 70’s

This watch has now become my favorite. It keeps accurate time, has a great retro look, and best of all, I can always take a look at the clear case back to see the mechanical inner workings of this watch, not just a tiny battery powered motor. You can find a great selection of the recraft series from following this link:

Technology’s Big Opportunity

Knowledge and awareness regarding “Wardrobe Technology” devices is very small. People don’t realize that wearable devices might be the future of technology and a very important part of their lives. People currently have a perception problem regarding technology fitting in and being a part of their wardrobe. The awareness factor isn’t there yet. As more devices are developed, people will be more aware and even more depended on wardrobe technology and its benefits.
There is no doubt that this type of technology will continue to grow. One important area that would benefit from this technology would be in health care. Wearable devices could help any human to stay active, physically fit and mentally strong. Wearable sensors could soon replace the blood tests by analyzing your health using human sweat. Devices that you can wear are considered to be the best fitness tracker like apple watches can track human’s physical activities, diabetes and heart rate. However, no data on the user’s health can be interpreted by the device. Someday Bluetooth technology will deliver this data from patient to doctor. This would be a major breakthrough.

There is growth in other fields using this type of technology. The military would be the field that benefits the most from this kind of technology’s growth. The platform of technologies that can be worn is being built using the internet. Devices are placed on military vehicles, which would help to track them or locate them. A GPS concept or approach is going to provide ground breaking technology moving forward. Also, valuable startups have come up with intellectual technologies that are highly preferred all over the world.
These companies see a big future in this type of technology. Worn sensors are expected to convert or interpret sign languages into understandable English. This would definitely bridge the communication gap that exists between deaf-mute and other individuals. Apple, with their i-Phones and Apple watch has led the way, benefiting from this type of technology. A small example of this technology being used every day includes all the apps available for your cell phone that can track your physical workout. They can track your distance/miles calories burned, time elapsed, etc.
There is no end regarding the potential and future of “Wardrobe Technology” There is no end regarding the benefits that these devices will provide!

Samung Gear S3 Smart Watches

Samsung Gear S3 Smart Watches

The successor to last year’s Gear S2, the Samsung Gear S3 Smart Watch is the Smart Watch for the today’s informed generation.   With the Apple Watch Series 2 heralding serious new tech, the rest of the Smart Watch crowd has had to up its game.

For the Gear S3, Samsung has decided to offer up two designs. There’s the more rugged Frontier for outdoor types that we’ve been testing out, and the Classic, which aims to be the more luxurious option of the two. Both still run on Samsung’s own Tizen operating system and that rotating bezel makes a welcome return.

There are numerous features and benefits that the Samsung Gear Smart Watch offers.

  1. You’ll be able to pair it with a Samsung phone, most Android phones, and now it even works with iPhones.
  2. It’s also adding features like built-in GPS for sports tracking and sending out SOS alerts, a speaker to make calls, Samsung Pay to, well, pay for stuff from your wrist, and a bigger battery.
  3. Skinny wrists beware: the Gear S3 is a big Smart Watch and that’s immediately going to put off anyone that was hoping for something similar in stature to the Gear S2. Its hulking 46mm frame makes it undeniably a more manly watch.
  4. It’s also noticeably heavier and thicker as well, no doubt to accommodate the additional sensors and a larger battery.
  5. If you like outdoor watches then you’ll appreciate the more rugged looking stainless steel body. But even then, something still feel a little bit ordinary about the Frontier.
